“Jump Start Your Career” Workshop

On Saturday, March 13th, the LMGA’s Educational Committee hosted career coach Art Dielhenn’s two-hour workshop, “Jump Start Your Career” at the Showbiz Store and Café in Los Angeles. Twenty managers and assistants attended the workshop and learned how to think about their work as a small business venture instead of personal emotional endeavor.
As the participants developed a better understanding of the basic principles of small business, it became increasingly clear that in order to be successful in today’s industry, location professionals have to wear the many hats of the departments within a small business; including research/development, production, marketing and accounting/finance.
Armed with this new approach and Art’s leadership, each participant then created a three-month primary career goal - be it within location managing or another career outside the industry. They explored step-by-step methods, which were then illustrated by a “web” of bubbles, with each bubble representing a step needed to move the individual closer towards their career goal. Additionally, everyone had to identify a daily activity that would also help them move towards their ultimate goal.
Art’s methods and encouraging demeanor helped everyone think of ways to solve some of the classic stumbling blocks and negative thinking. Money was not the ultimate goal; it was finding a project that would help one accomplish the goal and thereby create a life in which work provided more than financial satisfaction.
Another approach introduced was “Target 25”, which is to identify 25 people in your business (or goal career) that believe in you. These are people who would support your new endeavor, recommend you and provide you with information and ideas to help push your business forward.
Quickly the group realized two things: one, they each knew many people who would help or support their business or goal and two, the Target 25 initial people could help them to connect to 25 others who may have similar pursuits. It became increasingly clear that even within the small class, there were people who could help each other move towards their ultimate goals.

Before everyone knew it, the class was over but the group itself was energized. People were discussing how they thought they could integrate the brief career coaching ideas beyond their career and into their everyday life. It helped the LMGA members in attendance realize and appreciate the vast experience and knowledge that our profession requires of us, and to understand that this repertoire of skills are highly transferable to other enterprises. It turned out to be a great day of enlightening discussion about one’s personal satisfaction in their career and life and reached far beyond the mechanics of location managing.
