METRO RED LINE TOUR

Added August 30, 2006 by P Gluck

Did you know there are over 19,000 35-mm motion picture film reels installed on the ceiling at the Hollywood and Vine MTA Station?

Did you notice they have been painstakingly painted in color gradation from deep to light blue as they descend into what feels like infinity? Have you ever wondered who those flying men were at the Red Line Civic Center?

Wonder no more. With the aid of the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Docent Council, groups can learn about MTA's extensive public artworks, their artists and their creative processes. Since 1989, over 250 artists have been commissioned by the MTA to produce pieces ranging from railings, bench seats and bus stops to tiled walls and light fixtures. Wherever your eye lands, there seems to be an art object.

LMGA members were treated to an art tour when LMGA Board member Carole Segal contacted the MTA's Docent Council and set up the first of two tours. Wrangling Location Managers is never an easy task, especially if they have their cameras, but docent John Conada was able to keep the scouts on schedule and on task.

Gazing across the multi-level, crisscrossed, 7th Street Metro Station, one participant muttered, “Just like New York, but nicer weather".
